OUT AND ABOUT

What a week of music! Too much to be able to do justice to it all, with much unfortunately missed, however a few highlights for me personally: The biggest for me was the Friday night concert/party at the Star of the Sea Hall featuring Daniel Wesley joined by Mark and Josh, whose original sound, style, and personality is launching them on the ride everybody dreams of; perfectly warmed up by a wonderful surprise for me "Current Swell" young guys from Victoria with a very funky reggae roots thing going on; and up first Jordan Carrier with the perfect opportunity to tune up for next Saturday's CFOX Seeds final at the Commodore; with a sell out crowd and lots of friends, family, and love in the air. What a night!

Earlier in the week another terrific evening of music attending the White Rock Blues Society Talent Search Final, four strong bands, with the winners Sam and Luke showing a talent, energy, and originality that made their age irrelevant, until as more than a few people said to me, one realizes how young they actually are. Amazing!

Then the music of the Spirit of the Sea Festival. What a wonderful job by everyone involved! The weather wasn't too bad either, do you think? A few I was able to catch a bit of... Juno winner John Bottomley who made me think Gordon Lightfoot mixed with Bruce Springsteen... the transformation in Randy Schultz as he becomes the Mojo of Mojo Zydeco with style, flair and that irresistible beat.... Recording artist Jason Mitchell unveiling new song after new song to cheers and applause....Neil Harnett doing the sound all weekend on the main stage and then charming the crowd with timeless classics, and songs from his new CD....Kelly McGuiliam (?) blowing that great big sax with the Little Brother Band in the blue bandshell....the Jim Black Collective downstairs at Sideshows with their free style jazz, while upstairs we were warmed and charmed by the powerful lyrics and hooks first of Connor McGuire and then TJ from SuzyBand... Big band, small band, traditional to contemporary, classics new and old from here and there and everywhere in between.... something for everyone.... Well done Janice Savage!!MUSICAL ANECDOTE
I asked Rob Warwick, better known as ROCK.IT BOY, who put on the Daniel Wesley show, and has been booking people and events for a long time, what the most memorable booking was that he could remember. He told me that quite a few years ago when he was booking singles and duos in pubs he was called at the last minute for a booking in Bella Coola. He sent Gene Grooms a wonderful blues man. What he hadn't been made aware of was that the event was for a group of KKK, and Gene is black! He laughed as he remembered what it must have been like for poor Gene showing up. How did it go? I asked. Rob said it ended up turning out fine. "That's the power of the blues!" he finished with a laugh.
