Recording time for talented teens

new 'Pilgrimage' soon from Wesley

Dave Chesney, Surrey Now

Published: Friday, April 10, 2009

SAM & LUKE continue to make incredible strides in their career. The young White Rock brothers have knocked over local talent shows like bowling pins, been invited to partake in some of the more prestigious shows and, now, have recorded their first batch of songs.

Aided by Vancouver heavy "Uncle" KEN BOYCHUK, the Remedios teens ducked into White Rock's Rock Beach studio to lay down songs for their debut EP. Sam & Luke's next gig is April 9 at the Cottage Bistro in Vancouver. Copies of the EP will be on sale at the show.

RUSSELL PETERS, fresh off his hosting duties at the Juno Awards in Vancouver, is heading to Chicago. The comedian will be joined by ELLEN DEGENERES, GEORGE LOPEZ and JIMMY FALLON for the first in a series of comedy shows in America, patterned after the popular "Just For Laughs" comedy festival made famous in Montreal. So if you are planning on being in the Windy City in June, stop by and say hello to the "brown dude with the attitude."

DANIEL WESLEY sends word his new album is, in fact, done and ready to go. By July, the new Pilgrimage CD will be available online, at shows and, if there are any left by then, in record stores.

If you are considering starting a blues band, keep the following simple tips in mind: Somehow incorporate into your name the words "Slim," "Blind" or "Mississippi." One other tip: Get a harp (harmonica) player in your band if you want blues fans to take you seriously. This Saturday evening, the White Rock Blues Society presents the latest in its continuing series of great blues shows in the area. The theme this Saturday night (April 11) is International Harmonica Showcase, hosted by the incomparable HARPDOG BROWN with special guests STEVE KOZAK'S BLUES REVUE, BRIAN "Sechelt Red" MCFAYDEN plus Oregon's harp master HANK SHREVE., at the Pacific Inn Hotel's Rhumba Room bar. Tickets at the door, or advance through Tapestry Music in White Rock.

MAX & RUBY perform for the kids -- and the kid in all of us -- on Friday, April 24 at Surrey's world-class Bell Centre for the Performing Arts. Tickets are available through the box office in advance or at the door.

Congratulations to North Delta's EILEEN HIGGINS and husband Blake, who are enjoying some bonding time with their brand new baby girl, Lauren Marie, born March 1. The newborn's auntie Kathleen and uncle John continue to keep THE HIGGINS career rolling along with promotional duties until sis can rejoin the band and head out on a cross-Canada tour at the end of May.

Chesney's Chestnuts - In a dark and hazy room, peering into a crystal ball, the mystic delivered grave news: "There's no easy way to say this, so I'll just be blunt -- prepare yourself to be a widow. Your husband will die a violent and horrible death this year."

Visibly shaken, Laura stared at the woman's lined face, then at the single flickering candle, then down at her hands. She took a few deep breaths to compose herself. She simply had to know. She met the fortune teller's gaze, steadied her voice, and asked: "Will I be acquitted?"

Canada Calling - The first ever medal won at the modern-era Olympic Games came in 1904, with the Winnipeg Shamrocks taking gold in lacrosse.
